While shopping for the weekly necessities at Target today, Ezra decided he was too bored to sit in the cart and would like to try walking alongside me for a while.
Of course, that lasted for all of 10 seconds when he discovered that he was free to roam the store at will and his Mommy would tag along behind him carefully putting pack whatever he had decided to peruse and then dump on the floor.
Needless to say, he was swiftly plopped back into the seat of the cart, creating a tantrum the likes of which the pharmacy could hear from the toy section at the back of the store.
After some negotiating, it was decided that he could sit in the BASKET part of the cart (on top of a crate of nighttime diapers) as long as Mommy could walk alongside him, instead of behind. It worked great!
We picked new body wash and shampoo (based on smell and cartoon animal mascot of course), we decided on a new toy caddy for the bathtub, and generally had a productive (and tantrum free) end to our trip.
While standing at the checkout line paying for the goods, an employee walked over to our cart with a big roll of stickers and handed one to Ezra.
She smiled at him, told him he was a good boy, and said that he could share his sticker with me if he liked...then walked away.
Ezra looked at the sticker for a bit and I could see the imaginary shrug of the shoulders in his brain, "Why not?" he thought, as he passed the sticker over to me and went back to looking at his new shampoo bottle.
I glanced at the sticker and thought "oh, how cute...a little cartoon Target dog"....then I looked closer
Sigh...I can take the hint!

Ha ha ha! I absolutely love this story. Hillarious! Btw, when James got to the walking instead of cart riding age (and now again with May) I also struggled with the running amok problem. Here's how I fixed it: I let them carry a basket and they stick close by because then the light items I point out to them they get to put into their basket. If they run ahead they miss out and the items go in my cart instead. Both want to "help" enough that it works, for now at least. It works super well if there's something they want that can go in the basket (ie fruit snacks, craft supplies or bandaids.)
