Vote!

This morning my little sister sent me a link to a design contest that Apartment therapy is having for up and coming designers.

This guy's work is amazing (thats right....he made a hanging lamp out of medical vials!), so I just thought I'd get the word out and ask everyone to vote for Peter Sid's Bottles of Hope! Click here to be taken to the voting site. The contest ends tomorrow!

Lets hear it for good design! That is all...thank you. =)

Stocking up

Frozen brown rice is one of our weekly staples from Trader Joe's. Just three minutes in the microwave and we get light, fluffy rice to pair with anything. Talin loves it so much he'll sometimes just eat it as a snack!
This past week I was looking for ways to cut down our grocery bill. After some internet research I decided today was the day to try freezing our own rice.
Our poor rice cooker hasn't seen the light of day for a few years now...
but it still did a great job! It made seven fluffy cups of rice which I spread out on a cookie sheet to cool....
then filled up six freezer bags with individual portions. Squeezing all of the air out was a bit tricky, but there's something about these little blocks of rice that make me smile.
Pop one of those bags in the microwave, throw in some peas, black beans, parmesan cheese and Ezra's lunch is ready to go. Doesn't get any better then that! Here's to saving $6 a week! It doesn't sound like much...but spending $24 on rice a month was getting a little ridiculous. =)

Breakfast with a friend

If you bring a monkey to breakfast, chances are he'll want to hold your hand.
Holding your hand will make him feel like he's too far away, so he may ask for a hug instead.
Giving him a big hug will make him warm and sleepy,
he'll ask you if he can go get back in bed, which will remind YOU...
that's where you left your binki! Geez, thanks a lot Harvey! We'd almost gotten rid of that thing! =)

Careful the things you say...

While baking yesterday, Ezra decided to start tossing the measuring spoons out of their drawer. Giving him a playful warning, I said " heeey you stop it" in a silly voice....he decided he needed to re-create the moment for Daddy tonight.

P.S After we were all done laughing he began to sing the "clean up song" and picked up each little spoon. I should have gotten a video of THAT! =)

Dear Grandma June,

I know you don't read my blog, but I introduced your great-grandson to the glory of your gingerbread cookies yesterday. We talked about you while we made them and I told him about the way my mother's house would smell when we made them together on snowy days. He likes them. I take that back. He loves them! And as for me...do you think it's ok that I ate them for dinner AND breakfast? =) No wonder I can't loose this baby (+) weight.

I love you!

Afternoon nap...

A sun patch on a warm desk makes for one blissful kitty....
and apparently if you have a snaggle tooth...
it's difficult to keep you're tongue in your mouth when you're SOOOOO comfortable.

The first pie of the season

Yesterday Ezra and I decided to surprise Daddy man with his favorite treat...pumpkin pie! There's nothing better then coming home from a long week of work to the smell of pie baking in the oven. =)
Ezra was such a good little mixer. Once we got everything put together just right, he helped me pour it into the shell and took one last wiff before it went in the oven. YUM! It smelled soooooo gooood!
We decided to go down to the train station and meet Talin. Walking home with Ezra's little hands holding ours we passed a fall carnival the school next door was having. Between the pie, the colored lights and the happy sounds of kids having fun, last night felt like a holiday.
Hooray for a change in the seasons!

What should I be?

I stopped by a sale at Joann's a few weeks ago and picked up two costume patterns for Ezra. Talin and I were hoping that he would see the monkey and say "THAT ONE!" But, I didn't want to buy all the material, put the effort into making it, and then have him flat out reject it (especially since it involved putting a hat on his head...that's never a recipe for success. So far, he has allowed only ONE hat to rest on his head and it is in NO WAY monkey like)

So we presented him with seven different options (I guess eight...if you count the shiny dragonfly costume. HA!)

He held them in his hands for a few minutes...looked back and forth...asked us to tell him what each of them were. ( I kept saying "ohhhh look at that funny monkey) In the end, he handed them back and confidently declared..."doctor"! HUH?
We asked him again and without hesitating he replied, "DOCTOR!"
Well ok then!
Lucky for me broadcloth is the most inexpensive fabric in the world. This may be the cheapest costume EVER!
Now whenever we ask him what he's going to be for Halloween he cuts us off mid-sentence and declares..."D-O-C-T-O-R!" Good thing I didn't make that monkey costume.

Bulldozer

Ezra brought me his doodle board this morning and said "Look, Mommy, Bulldozer"
Not bad for a 20 month old eh?

Workin' at the car wash

Today was awful!
Literally from the first second I swung my legs out of bed things...were...horrible!

  • I broke a glass (and our salt shaker) opening the cupboard to make breakfast.
  • BOTH of the cats decided that the contents of their stomach belonged on the floor.
  • Ezra threw a flat out passive resistant fit at Home Depot (while I was trying to replace the broken shower head that had BLOWN off the wall and bonked me right in the neck)...when I picked him up while letting him know that I did not appreciate the looks we were receiving while he dragged himself along the floor...he abandoned his passivity and decided to be actively resistant by kicking and screaming all the way out.
(p.s. this fit began over my refusal to buy him a l-bend pipe...what he thought he needed an l-bend pipe for I will NEVER know!)

  • At the post office he cried giant crocodile tears when I shipped off birthday toys, that he seemed to think were his, to cousin Jonah ...and then again when I packaged up a stuffed elephant for Grandma Maridawn. The sweet postal worker may have gotten a harsher look then I intended when she asked "why didn't you bring some of his toys along to play with?" Are you kidding me lady?? My car is a toy box on wheels!
After fighting through lunch, I was starting to feel the frustration lift as Ezra ticked away his third hour into nap time (WOOOO)
  • and then my toenail fell off....EWWWW...I know...sorry....too much info. I stubbed it last week and apparently it was just waiting to abandon ship...I guess it was black and blue under my bright red polish..who knew?
By the time Ezra finally woke up (3 and 1/2 hours....hmmmmm I wonder if that means he's getting sick) it was time to change things up.

While playing with trucks, he kept asking me to "put on" Car Wash his all time favorite song. If we were living in a cartoon a light bulb would have suddenly appeared above my head.
One tub of soapy water, a towel, and a scrub brush later...our house became the happiest place on earth...

And of course we needed to blow dry the cars when they were all clean...just like the big dryers at the car wash we go through. =)
Oh yes...and he now thinks it's hilarious to do this when I ask him to smile for the camera. Ha! Goodbye horrible Thursday!! I won't be missing you...well...not most of you anyway. =)

No bears are out tonight...

For our last week of summer "school" Talin and I had planned on taking Ezra on his first camping trip. So, all week long we learned about forests, camping, hiking, and woodland animals.

Our first project was lots of fun! First, Ezra glued down die cut trees, a sun, and his favorite...a campfire.
Then he glued down a picture of Mommy, Daddy, and himself.
Now for the fun part....he glued die-cut foam tents on top of the pictures so that when he opened the flaps our pictures were inside the tent. He thought that was HILARIOUS!!
Of course we had to end things by adding a little color...
I got in on the action and drew some grass and a fire pit. He loved the pop-up feel of this picture. =)
Next, we used a sticker kit that I found at Michael's for a $1. It came complete with glittery animals(I know...they don't look sparkly...but trust me...they were.) and letters.
Ezra pointed to which animal he wanted me to pull of the backing...
and then stuck it down on a pre-cut sheet of construction paper.
When all the animals had a "home" we went back through the pages and talked about what sound each animal's name started with...then we pulled the corresponding letter off the sticker sheet..
and put it next to the animal. I think that Ezra thought this was the "food" for his animal friends because every time he stuck the letter on the page he would say, "nom, nom, nom"...and all of the letters are strangely close to the animals mouths....
Once he was done I glued the pages together (stapling would have been so much easier...note to self...get a stapler) and viola! He had created a little alphabet book about forest animals.
The last craft we were able to squeak in this week (only 3 projects? How sad is that? I guess our week was busier then I thought!) was a paper plate owl.
He really loved this one because it involved markers, googly eyes, and a foam beak!
Once everything was colored, glued, and basically put together...
he was so excited to see his new owl friend that he couldn't stop giving him kisses! =)
He was also VERY excited to show him all of the cool cars parked outside, "look owl!"
Owl got a place of honor on Ezra's bedroom door.
When Talin got home on Friday we realized that in a crowded state like California you have to book your campsite MONTHS in advance!! Needless to say...we hadn't planned ahead and there were no campsites open. Oh well! I guess we'll have to have that adventure another time.

Instead, we packed up our little explorer and headed up to Muir Woods. When we were living in Oakland we used to make frequent trips up to marvel at the redwoods. Something about living on the peninsula has stopped that activity...I think it's because we have to drive through the city now...and that is NEVER fun! We decided to start early to avoid the heaviest traffic....Ezra was super excited about breakfast in the car! =)
We made it through the toughest traffic spots without much trouble...in fact, some of the roads were eerily empty...
we got across the bridge in record time!
Finding a parking place at Muir Woods was a different story! Bah! Sweet Talin dropped us off, parked about 1/2 mile away and then made the trek back. We were FINALLY on our way!
I had forgotten the feeling of standing underneath the shade of these trees. Even surrounded by Labor Day sight seers I still felt the quiet reverence that always floods my soul when I walk into these woods.
A couple of deer were eating right next to the path. Completely unconcerned with the unending flow of humans streaming past them (they're in the upper left corner...can you see them?)
Ezra LOVED that he was free to run, climb, and explore.
He's such a city kid, I worry sometimes that he doesn't have enough access to nature...
or that his awareness of the natural world around him is somehow being stunted by life in a two bedroom apartment...in a big city.
I can't tell you how happy it made me to see him hiking, getting down in the dirt and looking at bugs, picking up rocks and tossing them into the stream. I've said it before...and I'll say it again, kids need this! If I could I would BEG Talin to buy us a huge ranch somewhere so that I could just throw open the doors, look down at Ezra and say, "lets go get dirty!" Ha! Maybe one day.
In the mean time though...it's fun to have places like this near by...
what would we do without National Parks to preserve this amazing beauty for us?
By the end of our adventures Ezra was dirty and tired....
but he'd learned a lot...seen a lot...and seemed to really enjoy being in the woods.
Needless to say he was literally snoring 10 seconds after we buckled him in! =)
And yes, Aunt Heidi, we stopped at that fun little grocery store and got yogurt pretzles...just like old times. =)

Our books this week were: Maisy Goes Camping, Ten in the Den, Old Bear, Rabbit's Morning, and Kitten's First Full Moon
