Edelweiss

Remember when we were little and the idea of seeing someone while talking to them "on the phone" blew our minds?!
How awesome is it to be living in that reality?!

Thanks for the lullaby Mom and Dad!
I know it was meant for the EZ man but you have NO idea how much it comforted me too. =)
Love you!

When the Dad's away...

Tonight we sent Talin off on his first international business trip!
We're excited for him....but sad to be so far apart.

To cheer ourselves up we stopped on the way home and snagged a cheapy pizza.
Snuggled in our pj's, noshing on clementines and watching a favorite show...things started to feel a little better.

Then Talin sent me a text about his four course inflight meal, the fold out aerobed he had nestled into.....and Owen decided to take a lick of the hummus on my plate.

Booooooooo!
It's going to be a looooooooooooooong week.
HA!

Are you watching closely?

.... especially at 1:16...

EEEEE!
We had such a wonderful opportunity to work with the church's media specialists when they came to visit the bay area a few months ago.
It was definitely an experience that we won't soon forget. =)

Hope

The earliest memories of my grandmother are mainly made up of senses and feelings....her bright warm house so safe and inviting, the dry smell of her finished basement with it's enormous chalkboard covering one whole wall....the taste of her thick, warm, wheat bread and lemon tinged vanilla ice cream fresh from the salty churn.

As I grew, the memories were made in a quiet comfortable friendship with unconditional love.
The sound of her  "big bad wolf" impression creaking across the phone line as she tried to convince me that it wasn't really my Grandmother calling but a character from a fairy tale.....school shopping with her and coming home with a khaki circle skirt complete with matching top....sitting with her at the dinner table after most of the family had moved on and talking while picking at serving bowls still holding garden ripe fruits and salads.

Almost 5 years ago I sat across from her again and tried to remind her who I was.
I held up a picture of myself and she told me all about her granddaughter Jenny and what she was doing with her life.
I didn't mind, I didn't even feel sad.
She may not have connected my face with that picture, but she still knew who I was.
2 years ago I hugged her at a cozy Christmas dinner.
She smiled politely at me and talked about the cute little boy that sat on my lap.  I realized that the memories that she had of me had faded away.

Last week she was released from this earthly life, and I am profoundly grateful for the knowledge that I have....
...the knowledge that doesn't just whisper to my aching heart, but screams to my rational head....
...the knowledge that I will see her again, and the next time we meet, she will KNOW me!
I can not wait for that day to be gathered in her arms again, and to thank her for all that she has given me.
The choices she made in her life on Earth affected my eternity and for that I will forever be in her debt.

Her funeral was peaceful.
We were all sad to be left behind for a time, but the message of hope and the understanding of eternal families rang true.
Lisa found a beautiful poem that elegantly put words to the spirit we all felt....

The Ship of Life  by John T Baker

Along the shore I spy a ship
As she sets out to sea;
She spreads her sails and sniffs the breeze
And slips away from me.
I watch her fading image shrink,
As she moves on and on,
Until at last she's but a speck,
Then someone says, "she's gone".
Gone where?  Gone only from our sight
And from our farewell cries;
That ship will somewhere reappear
To other eager eyes.
Beyond the dim horizon's rim
Resound the welcome drums,
And while we're crying, "There she goes"
They're shouting, "Here she comes!"

I love you Grandma June.
I will miss you...until we meet again!

Yo Ho!

This week's summer camp theme was "Pirates!"

Needless to say it's been a raucous week full of sea chanties, adorable buccaneer crafts, and hours and hours of talking like a pirate.
It was a lot of fun, but Ezra couldn't WAIT for "dress like a pirate" friday!
HA!
All week long he told me what he wanted his costume to look like
(even vetoing a few ideas I thought were fun....
"what do you mean you don't want a beard painted on your face?")
This morning, when he woke up, he was so excited to find his outfit laid out for him and literally begged to get dressed and out the door!
I wish I could have taken a picture of his little class.
They all looked SO cute in their pirate get-ups, especially the tiny pirate girls.
I had to stop myself from squealing at a few of them!
Teacher Laura went so far as to paint a goatee on, which made the kids laugh as she greeted them all in a booming pirate voice, "I'm sorry you guys I forgot to shave last night". =)

Three hours later we returned to a room full of exhausted, but happy little pirates.
Ezra couldn't wait to tell me about his treasure hunt through the park that ended with finding a chest full of goody bags.
How awesome is preschool life?

Round Two

A few months ago (well really more like almost a year ago) we attempted our first round of mini golf with Ezra.
Unfortunately, we ALSO decided to make it one of our first trips out after potty training...needless to say the visit was cut short due to potty skill complications.
HA!
But, the attendant was nice enough to give us free passes to come back....on Saturday we decided it was time to make good on those passes.
What are lazy Saturday afternoons for right?
Ezra was actually pretty excited about our golfing adventure....
...although, he  decided that one shot was all he needed for each hole....
...and then he was off exploring and "cheering us from the sidelines"...
...by the 18th hole he had come up with his own little strategy for lining up the shot....and WHACKING the ball as hard as he could.
HA!

The boys rounded out the fun with a stop in the arcade.

Why do all arcades smell the same...
 ...look the same...
...and sound the same?
HA!
After a little prize case action, we piled in the car and headed for home with Ezra in the backseat already planning out our next visit.

Loot

This picture makes my heart smile. =)

Well....now what?

This past week Ezra started summer camp at our local community center.
I thought it would be a fun opportunity for him to spend his mornings "mom free", while living it up
(playing games, making crafts, singing songs...you know...the good stuff)
in a room full of friends.

The first day I felt like crying....he wasn't so sure that he didn't want to cry either...but at the end of the morning I returned to find that he LOVED it!
By Wednesday, I had to convince him to kiss me goodbye before he dashed off to play dinosaurs with his newest guy friends.

For the first few days I kept myself busy
(the gym, the post office, the bank...you know...the boring stuff)
but by the middle of the week
(after doing the dishes AGAIN....and vacuuming AGAIN...)
I found myself asking, "now what'?
HA!
And then (yes truthfully, it took me this long) I realized that I could do ANYTHING!!
All of those things I sometimes feel guilty about making Ezra do with me.....I could do guilt trip free!!
WEEEEEEE!
I played in my favorite fabric store for what felt like hours...
...I walked up and down the aisles of Target....WITHOUT a cart!!!
I actually looked at shoes and clothes.....and BAGS!!
I read....and read....and read......I'd forgotten what it feels like to just sit and devour a book!
I spent time with the fuzzy ones.
Emma was uncontrollably drooling she was so excited to be brushed this long!
I found time for an old friend....a friend who's been diligently completing a "one trick pony" job but has waited patiently for inspiration and re-discovery...
Speaking of time with old friends, I got to enjoy a breakfast date with my favorite friend in the whole world at a funky little dinner we've been waiting to try.
Who knew breakfast dates could be so fun?
By the end of every day, Ezra was happy and exhausted....full of funny stories, and new songs to share.
And, I was content and relaxed.
Nothing beat the look on that little boy's face, though, when I walked into the room at pick-up time!
And, nothing beat that giant kiss he planted on me each day as I swooped him into my arms for a super squishy "I missed you so much!" hug.

Why?

Every morning, like clockwork, the first sound I hear is Ezra's door opening....
...then a hurried shuffle as he bustles into our room carrying as much bedding as he can.

He tosses his bundle on the bed...then stands there breathing quietly surveying what else he might need.
Dashing back out of the room, I hear him pull his door closed HARD a few minutes later ...making sure no cats can get in while he's away!
Pff.
He dumps his menagerie of animals and then nestles down safe and sound between Talin and I.

Safe, cozy, and comfortable.....
....he then proceeds to wake us up!!
HA!
Why?  Why? Why? =)
